Symphony no. 8 in C minor, op. 65

Album by Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich & Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra & Mariss Jansons

Symphony No. 8 in C minor, Op. 65 is a symphony by Dmitri Shostakovich, composed and first performed in 1943. Cast in four extended movements for large orchestra, it features sombre, often dissonant orchestral textures, dense motivic development and sharp contrasts of tempo and mood, and it occupies a central place among Shostakovich's wartime symphonies as a more inward and tragic statement compared with some of his earlier wartime works.
First released: 2001
