Winterreise is a song cycle for voice and piano by Austrian composer Franz Schubert, composed in 1827. The cycle sets a sequence of poems to music and, as a late work in Schubert's output, embodies Romantic Lied characteristics through stark pianistic textures, advanced harmonic language and a sustained focus on themes of winter, solitude and existential reflection, which helped shape the later development of art-song.
