Fidelio is the only opera by Ludwig van Beethoven, first performed in 1805 and revised to its final form in 1814. The work blends classical operatic forms with expansive orchestral writing, dramatic choruses and themes of liberty and justice, and occupies a distinct place in Beethoven's output as his sole completed stage work within early 19th-century musical developments.
