The Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross Op. 51b, Hob XXIB

Album by Joseph Haydn & The Shostakovich String Quartet

The Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross, Op. 51b, Hob. XXIB is an orchestral work by Joseph Haydn, composed in 1786. Its seven contemplative movements, originally intended for Good Friday devotions and later adapted into other formats, are characterised by sombre, slow-moving textures, clear harmonic language and expressive contrasts, and the piece occupies a notable place in Haydn's late-period engagement with programme-like sacred music.
