Peer Gynt is a pair of orchestral suites by Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg, the first drawn from his incidental music for Henrik Ibsen's play which premiered in 1876 and a second suite arranged in 1893. Rooted in Romantic-era orchestral writing and infused with Norwegian folk-inspired melodies, the suites employ colourful orchestration, atmospheric contrasts and dramatic gestures that reflect Grieg's contribution to national Romanticism and his place in late 19th-century music.
