Cello Concertos nos. 1 and 2

Album by Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich & Enrico Dindo & DR SymfoniOrkestret & Gianandrea Noseda

Cello Concertos Nos. 1 and 2 are concertos for cello and orchestra by Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich, composed in 1959 and 1966 respectively. They combine sombre, intense lyricism, sharp dissonance and sparse orchestration characteristic of mid-20th-century Soviet modernism, and occupy a central place in Shostakovich's later output for their psychologically charged solo writing and expansion of the cello repertoire.
