Oberto is the first opera by Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi, premiered in 1839. Musically it reflects early Italian Romantic and bel canto traditions with relatively straightforward orchestration and an emphasis on vocal lines and ensembles, and it represents an early stage in Verdi's development of melodic invention and dramatic characterisation that would be expanded in his later operas.
