Symphony no. 7 "Leningrad"

Album by Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich & St. Petersburg Academic Symphony Orchestra & Alexander Sergeyevich Dmitriev

Symphony No. 7 "Leningrad" is the seventh symphony by Dmitri Shostakovich, composed in 1941 and first performed in 1942. A large-scale orchestral work in four movements, it juxtaposes expansive, march-like material and ostinato-driven textures with lyrical slow passages and dramatic contrasts, and is closely associated with the siege of Leningrad, representing a major wartime work in Shostakovich's oeuvre and in mid-20th-century Soviet music history.
First released: 21st June 2005
