From the House of the Dead

Album by Leoš Janáček & Chor der Wiener Staatsoper & Wiener Philharmoniker & Charles Mackerras

From the House of the Dead is an opera by Czech composer Leoš Janáček, premiered in 1930. The work exemplifies Janáček's late style, employing speech-inflected vocal lines, austere and often dissonant orchestration and fragmentary motifs to evoke the bleak psychological reality of a Siberian prison camp, signalling a move away from his earlier lyricism.
