The Great Service
Album by William Byrd & Cambridge Choir of King’s College & Stephen Cleobury
The Great Service is an extended choral setting by English composer William Byrd, composed in the late 16th century (c.1590s). The work is a large-scale Renaissance Anglican liturgical setting characterised by intricate polyphony, contrasts between full choir and solo writing, and careful text-setting that makes it a representative example of late Tudor sacred music in Byrd's output.
