Symphony no. 5
Album by Gustav Mahler & Colburn Orchestra & Gerard Schwarz
Symphony No. 5 is the fifth symphony by Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, completed in 1902 and first performed in 1904. A large-scale late-Romantic orchestral work in five movements, it juxtaposes sombre brass-led marches, contrapuntal development and a lyrical slow movement scored for strings and harp, and marks a transition in Mahler's output from song-infused symphonic writing toward purely instrumental symphonic statements.
