Symphonie no. 2 / Finlandia / Valse Triste
Album by Jean Sibelius & Berliner Philharmoniker & James Levine
This release is a compilation album of orchestral works by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, with material dating from around 1899 to 1904. The programme pairs late-Romantic symphonic writing with nationalistic tone-poem material and shorter orchestral miniatures, and features expansive melodies, rich brass sonorities, modal harmony and folk-derived rhythms that helped define his contribution to Nordic orchestral music.
