Il trovatore is an opera by Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi, first performed in 1853. The four-act Romantic work is characterised by vigorous orchestration, dramatic vocal writing with demanding solo and ensemble passages, and pronounced contrasts of mood and colour, and it sits in Verdi's middle period as an example of his development of dramatic pacing and thematic integration within 19th-century Italian opera.
