Serenades op.11 & op.16

Album by Johannes Brahms & Bernard Haitink & Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest

Serenades Op.11 and Op.16 are orchestral serenades by Johannes Brahms, composed in the late 1850s (Op.11, 1857–1859) and around 1859–1860 (Op.16). They blend classical chamber textures with early Romantic orchestral colour, showcasing wind and string writing that anticipates Brahms's later symphonic work and marking a formative stage in his move from chamber-music idioms to larger-scale orchestration.
First released: 2nd December 1991
