Harold in Italy is a symphony with solo viola by French composer Hector Berlioz, composed and premiered in 1834. Combining programme music elements with Romantic orchestral colour and an extended, lyrical solo viola line, the work explores descriptive themes and innovative orchestration and represents a step in Berlioz's development of the programme symphony and the expansion of 19th-century orchestral technique.
