Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op. 68, known as the 'Pastoral', is the sixth symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven, composed and first performed in 1808. The symphony employs lyrical themes, rustic rhythms and evocative orchestration — including imitations of bird calls and flowing motifs — to depict countryside scenes, and it represents an early example of programme music in Beethoven's middle period that emphasised descriptive, extra-musical content in the symphonic form.
