Sinfonia Antarctica
Album by Ralph Vaughan Williams & London Symphony Orchestra & André Previn
Sinfonia Antarctica is the Seventh Symphony by English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, completed in 1952. Adapting material he composed for a mid-century Antarctic film, the work employs expansive orchestration, wordless female chorus, solo soprano and atmospheric orchestral textures to evoke icebound landscapes, reflecting a late-career turn towards vivid timbral colour in his symphonic writing.
First released: 1981
