Duo for Violin and Cello, Sonata for Solo Cello

Album by Zoltán Kodály & János Starker & Elmira Darvarova

Duo for Violin and Cello and the Sonata for Solo Cello are chamber works by Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály, composed in 1914 and 1915 respectively. Both pieces draw on Hungarian folk modalities and rhythms and combine late-Romantic harmonic language with modal melodies and demanding, often contrapuntal instrumental writing that signalled Kodály's early mature period and influenced Central European chamber repertoire.
