Symphony No. 1 is the first symphony by Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, composed in 1888. The work exemplifies late-Romantic orchestration with large-scale forms, folk-influenced melodies and dramatic contrasts, and it occupies a formative place in Mahler's output as it introduces orchestral colour and structural ideas he expanded in later symphonies.
