All-Night Vigil (Vespers)
Album by Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff & Seattle Pro Musica & Karen P. Thomas
The All-Night Vigil (Vespers) is a choral composition by Sergei Rachmaninov, completed in 1915. The work draws on Russian Orthodox chant and dense polyphony, featuring extended low bass writing and rich, dark harmonies that produce a sombre, resonant sonority, and it is a late example of Rachmaninov's sacred choral output composed shortly before his emigration.
