Enigma Variations and Falstaff are orchestral works by the English composer Sir Edward Elgar, completed in 1899 and 1913 respectively. Enigma Variations presents a set of variations that portray a series of characterful portraits through inventive orchestration and melodic interplay, while Falstaff is a later symphonic study employing expansive, programmatic writing and thematic transformation that reflects Elgar's mature approach and occupies a significant place in early 20th-century British orchestral repertoire.
