The Cello Concertos

Album by Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich & Симфонический оркестр Мариинского театра & Valery Gergiev & Gautier Capuçon

The Cello Concertos are two concertos for cello and orchestra by Dmitri Shostakovich, composed in 1959 and 1966. They exemplify Shostakovich's late-period orchestral voice, juxtaposing terse, often brooding themes and stark orchestral colours with moments of lyricism, and are representative of his later concerted writing for solo instrument and orchestra.
