Madama Butterfly is an opera by Italian composer Giacomo Puccini, first performed in 1904. The work combines late-Romantic orchestration and soaring vocal lyricism with elements of verismo and musical gestures evoking a Japanese setting, and it occupies a central place in Puccini's output and early 20th-century operatic repertoire.
