Symphony No. 1 is the first symphony by Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, completed in 1888 and first performed in 1889. A large-scale late-Romantic orchestral work, it displays expansive structures, innovative orchestration and the integration of folk-like melodies and songful elements into symphonic form, marking Mahler's emergence as a symphonic composer and a step toward his later large-scale, programme-oriented works.
