Le Grand Macabre is an opera by Hungarian composer György Ligeti, completed in 1977 and premiered in 1978. The score combines avant-garde techniques, macabre humour and pastiche, using collage, extended vocal and instrumental effects and stark theatrical contrasts to represent a distinctive late-career turn in Ligeti's output as his only full-length operatic work that engages with absurdity and satire within contemporary classical music.
