Messiah is an English-language oratorio by George Frideric Handel, composed in 1741 and first performed in 1742. The work combines Baroque choral and orchestral writing with solo arias, recitatives and contrapuntal choral passages, and represents a late-career focus by Handel on the English oratorio form that contributed to the development of subsequent choral traditions.
