Songs of Travel / On Wenlock Edge
Album by Ralph Vaughan Williams & Sir Thomas Allen & Robert Tear & City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra & Simon Rattle
Songs of Travel and On Wenlock Edge are song cycles by English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, composed in 1904 and 1909 respectively. Both set English poetry for solo voice with piano and, for On Wenlock Edge, a string quartet, and they show Vaughan Williams's shift to folk-influenced melody, use of modal harmony, incorporation of traditional textures and a more direct musical language that shaped his later vocal and orchestral work.
