Das Rheingold is an opera by German composer Richard Wagner, premiered in 1869 as the prologue to his four-part cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen. Musically it features Wagner's early use of extended leitmotifs, dense orchestration and continuous musical flow that underpins the saga's mythic drama, and it occupies a pivotal place in his career as the opening segment of his late-Romantic epic.
