Symphony No. 8, nicknamed "Symphony of a Thousand", is a symphony by Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, completed in 1906 and first performed in 1910. The work is scored for vastly expanded forces, including a large orchestra, multiple choirs and vocal soloists, and juxtaposes a largely abstract symphonic first part with a large-scale choral second part based on religious and philosophical texts, representing a distinctive example of Mahler's late-Romantic output and of large-scale orchestral-choral repertoire.
