Piano Sonata no. 2 / Études-Tableaux, op. 33
Album by Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff & Hélène Grimaud
Piano Sonata No. 2 and the Études-Tableaux, Op. 33 are solo piano works by Sergei Rachmaninoff, composed in 1913 (the sonata was later revised in 1931) and 1911 respectively. Both pieces exemplify late-Romantic Russian piano writing through expansive melodic gestures, rich chromatic harmonies and considerable technical demands, and they form prominent components of Rachmaninoff's mature output bridging his pre-revolutionary period and later revisions.
