Symphonie fantastique is a programme symphony by French composer Hector Berlioz, composed and first performed in 1830. The work uses vivid orchestration, recurring idée fixe motifs and dramatic orchestral effects to portray a narrative of passion and obsession, and it played a central role in the development of Romantic-era orchestral and programme music.
