The Canticles
Album by Benjamin Britten
The Canticles are a set of five vocal compositions by English composer Benjamin Britten, written between 1947 and 1974. Scored for various solo voices with piano or small chamber ensemble, they blend Anglican-liturgical and poetic texts with Britten's modal-inflected tonal language and intimate chamber textures, occupying a distinctive place in his output as concentrated explorations of vocal and spiritual expression.
