Symphonies Nos. 1 and 3 "Scottish" are orchestral works by Felix Mendelssohn, composed in 1824 and 1842 respectively. Rooted in the early Romantic idiom with strong classical balance, these symphonies feature Mendelssohn's orchestral clarity, lyrical themes and vivid use of orchestral colour, with the First demonstrating his youthful precocity and the Third reflecting a later, more atmospheric and nationally inflected conception inspired by Scotland.
