The Turn of the Screw

The Turn of the Screw is a chamber opera by English composer Benjamin Britten, first performed in 1954. Scored for a small orchestra and focused vocal forces, the work employs tightly woven thematic cells, contrapuntal textures and recurring instrumental motifs to produce a spare, often eerie psychological drama, and it represents Britten's mid-career turn towards compact, psychologically intense operatic writing.
