Piano Trio No. 2 and Piano Quintet are chamber works by Dmitri Shostakovich, composed in 1944 and 1940 respectively. Both pieces exemplify his mature chamber style, combining stark tonal contrasts, contrapuntal textures and an intense interplay between piano and strings, and they mark key developments in his output as he moved from late 1930s lyricism towards the more austere language of his wartime compositions.
