Asrael Symphony

Album by Josef Suk & Česká filharmonie & Jiří Bělohlávek

Asrael (Symphony No. 2) is a symphony by Czech composer Josef Suk, completed in 1906. The large-scale late-Romantic orchestral work employs dense chromaticism, rich brass and string textures and extended thematic development to create an elegiac, sometimes brooding sound world written after the deaths of Antonín Dvořák and Suk's wife, and it marks a shift in his output toward greater harmonic daring within early 20th-century Czech music.
