Symphonies nos. 9 & 12
Album by Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich & Radio Filharmonisch Orkest & Mark Wigglesworth
Symphonies nos. 9 & 12 are orchestral works by Dmitri Shostakovich, composed in 1945 and 1961 respectively. They contrast strongly in scale and rhetoric: the Ninth is concise and classically proportioned with brisk, often spare orchestration, while the Twelfth, composed later, is larger in scope with prominent brass and percussion and contains material explicitly linked to political themes in his postwar output.
First released: July 2007
