Symphony no. 8
Album by Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich & London Symphony Orchestra & Mstislav Rostropovich
Symphony No. 8 is the eighth symphony by Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich, composed and premiered in 1943. The work is a large-scale, four-movement orchestral composition marked by sombre, densely textured orchestration, stark dynamic contrasts and a brooding, often desolate tone that reflects the wartime context and occupies a pivotal, introspective position in Shostakovich's mid-career symphonic output.
