The Fairy Queen

Album by Henry Purcell & Scholars Baroque Ensemble

The Fairy-Queen is a semi-opera by English composer Henry Purcell, first performed in 1692. Rooted in the English Baroque, the work blends spoken drama with masques and musical interludes featuring choruses, solo arias, dances and instrumental passages that showcase Purcell's expressive vocal writing, contrapuntal textures and basso continuo, and it is an important example of Restoration-era stage music within his output.
