Elijah is an oratorio by German composer Felix Mendelssohn, first performed in 1846. Rooted in the Romantic choral-orchestral tradition, it employs expansive choral passages, solo vocal writing and vivid orchestral colouring to dramatise a biblical narrative, and it occupies an important place in Mendelssohn's later output, helping to reinvigorate the 19th-century oratorio tradition and influence Victorian choral practice.
