Enigma Variations / Cockaigne Overture
Album by Edward Elgar & Baltimore Symphony Orchestra & David Zinman
Enigma Variations and the Cockaigne Overture are orchestral works by English composer Edward Elgar, composed in 1899 and 1901 respectively. Both pieces exemplify late-Romantic British orchestral writing, employing rich orchestration, sweeping lyricism and vivid characterisation, and they occupy a central place in Elgar's early career and in the wider development of British orchestral music around the turn of the 20th century.
