Stabat Mater
Album by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi & Orchestra da camera Benedetto Marcello & Flavio Scogna
Stabat Mater is a sacred choral work by Italian composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, composed in 1736. Scored for two vocal soloists with string ensemble and basso continuo, its concise, lyrical vocal lines, poignant harmonic shifts and blend of counterpoint and galant melody epitomise late Baroque Italian sacred style and were composed near the end of Pergolesi's short career, influencing subsequent sacred and operatic vocal writing.
