Symphony no. 5
Album by Gustav Mahler & BBC Philharmonic & Günther Herbig
Symphony No. 5 is the fifth symphony by Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, completed in 1902. The purely orchestral work represents a shift in Mahler's output away from vocal-symphonic forces toward large-scale instrumental writing, characterised by dramatic contrasts, intricate contrapuntal textures and an expanded brass and orchestral palette that marks a key transitional point in his career.
