Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, Op. 55, commonly known as the Eroica, is a symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven composed in 1803–1804 and first performed in 1805. The work, rooted in the Classical symphonic tradition but expanding its scale and harmonic language, features dramatic contrasts, extended development and a heroic character that marked a turning point in Beethoven's middle period and influenced nineteenth-century symphonic practice.
