Messiah is an English-language oratorio by Georg Friedrich Händel, composed in 1741 and first performed in 1742. Musically it exemplifies Handel's mature Baroque style, combining grand choral writing, solo arias, recitative and varied orchestral colour with contrapuntal techniques, and it occupies a central place in his English oratorios as a synthesis of dramatic and sacred musical forms.
