Dido and Aeneas is a short English opera by composer Henry Purcell, composed and first performed around 1689. The work exemplifies English Baroque vocal and theatrical writing with a small instrumental ensemble and continuo accompaniment, and it occupies a central place in Purcell's stage oeuvre and in the development of English opera.
