Death and the Maiden
Album by Franz Schubert & Britten Quartet & Hephzibah Menuhin & Amadeus Quartet
Death and the Maiden is Franz Schubert's String Quartet No. 14 in D minor, composed in 1824. Rooted in early Romantic chamber music, it employs a taut, motif-driven structure with stark contrasts between slow and fast movements and uses a theme adapted from an earlier vocal composition, marking one of Schubert's late, more intense contributions to the quartet repertoire.
