Carmina Burana is a scenic cantata by German composer Carl Orff, composed in 1935–36 and first performed in 1937. Drawing on medieval Latin and Middle High German texts, it is scored for large chorus, soloists and orchestra and is characterised by dramatic choral writing, driving rhythms and vivid orchestral colours, occupying a central place in Orff's output and in 20th-century choral repertoire.
