Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, Op. 55 ("Eroica") is a symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven, composed in 1803–1804 and first performed in 1805. The work expanded the scale and scope of the symphony through extended movements, intense thematic development, bold harmonic innovations and inventive orchestral writing, and it occupies a pivotal place in Beethoven's middle period as he moved toward larger formal structures and a heightened expressive range.
