Symphony No. 1 is the first symphony by Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, completed in 1888 and first performed in 1889. The work is characterised by late-Romantic orchestral writing that incorporates folk-like melodies, stark contrasts in mood and orchestral colour, and early hints of the expansive, programme-influenced symphonic approach Mahler developed in his later works.
